Troon is a resort town and port situated on the coast of South Ayrshire, Scotland, eight miles north of Ayr and three miles north-west of Glasgow’s International Prestwick Airport. Troon is famous for its Royal Troon Golf Club founded in 1878. The course originally had 5-holes before it was extended to 18-holes in 1886, and is now one of the host courses for the Open Golf Championship, the first time being 1923. The club has a second course named The Portland. Once a busy freight port and shipbuilders, Troon is now a focus for cruise ship docking, a marina for pleasure crafts, a lifeboat service and a roll-on-roll-off ferry service linking with Ireland. The name ‘Troon’ comes from Celtic meaning ‘nose’ or ‘headland’ which is a good geographical description of the town’s natural harbour jutting out to sea, with the beaches of the North Sands and South Sands either side, the wide beaches are backed by The Esplanade making Troon a popular seaside resort. There are hotels and holiday accommodation in the area. Troon has a busy town centre with a variety of shops, facilities and amenities. The harbour is a centre for leisure sailing in the Firth of Clyde.
