Elderslie is an ancient village in Renfrewshire in west central Scotland, situated between Paisley and Johnstone. The village is famous as the reputed birthplace of William Wallace c1270 and home to the well-known Stoddards Carpets, a famous client was the Titanic Ocean liner. An example of the fine quality carpets can be seen in nearby Culzean Castle. Archaeologists have found relics dating back to the Neolithic period. To the south of the village on the hillside stands an ancient ritual standing-stone. Elderslie has historically interesting features including the 19th century Wallace Tavern, the Moat House built1903 and the library dating from 1799. Village Hall funded by Stoddards opened in 1881. The remains and the outline of Elderslie Castle lye in the village, on the site of the Castle stands a large Wallace Memorial, dedicated to the leading figure in the struggle for Scotland’s Independence during the 13th century. A parade is held at the monument every year to celebrate Wallace’s achievements. Elderslie has a shopping area with a variety of shops and amenities, takeaways and restaurants. There is a cycle track running through to Kilbirnie. The village has a swimming pool, golf course, bowling club
