Purley is located in the London Borough of Croydon. It can be found along the A23 at the point where the A22 branches off. It is convenient, therefore, for access to Central London via the A23 north bound. South bound, the A23 provides access to the M23 leading to Gatwick Airport and Brighton. It also connects directly with the M25. Purley has been made famous on more than one occasion by television comedy. It was the setting for the sitcom Terry and June, starring Terry Scott and June Whitfield, which ran from 1979 to 1987. It had previously also been in two Monty Python sketches, the most famous of which being the 'Nudge, Nudge, Wink, Wink' sketch (Purley squire, famous place…); the other being the 'Kilimanjaro Expedition' sketch. Nearby Kenley Aerodrome was one of the most important fighter stations during World War II and is now home to a gliding club. Purley enjoyed considerable growth during the 1920s and 1930s. During this time Purley earned a reputation for providing spacious homes in a less urban environment while still retaining convenient links to inner London. For this reason it has become home to some of the highest earners in the UK, including celebrities such as Francis Rossi, lead singer of Status Quo
