The village of Great Hallingbury featured in the Doomsday Book & the parish church of St.Giles' is very ancient, being about nine hundred years old. Great Hallingbury is ideally placed a few miles south-east of Bishops Stortford, near the River Stort and the Great Eastern railway line and just 2 miles from Stansted Airport. Junction 8 of the M11 is approximately 1.5 miles from the village centre too. This picturesque little village is so named due to being located on the perimeter of what was Hallingbury Place estate, adjacent to Hatfield Forest. The forest is 1000 acres of ancient woodland, dating back to the Middle Ages and now there’s a café and it is owned by the National Trust. Another venue for walking, cycling or horse riding is Flitch Way, 14 miles of disused railway line. A range of accommodation is available here at the charming Tudor-style Manor Hotel, Woollcott House (also a restaurant) and Yew Tree Farmhouse. There used to be 3 pubs prior to the Industrial Revolution but lack of trade forced 2 to close and only the traditional inn with a chequered but lengthy history survived – Hop Poles.
