When celebrity chef Jamie Oliver chose Hoxton as the location for his restaurant Fifteen, it was a very public recognition of an amazing transformation for this part of London. Once down-at-heel and filled with derelict industrial buildings, Hoxton emerged in the early Nineties as one of London's most exciting, fashionable and artistic districts, heaving with cutting-edge bars, clubs, gastropubs, restaurants, music venues and arts centres. The original creative community living and/or working in Hoxton included Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Gary Hume and fashion designer Alexander McQueen. They may now have moved on, but their spirit survives in the galleries which proliferate across Hoxton and its neighbour Shoreditch. White Cube 2 attracts world-class exhibitors, while Hoxton Hall, a Grade II-listed Victorian music hall, encourages young, local talent and arts companies. The Geffrye Museum, housed in Grade I-listed almshouses, exhibits a history of British middle-class home interiors from the 1600s to the present day in various period rooms. Hoxton is now an area where loft-dwelling professionals live alongside a more traditional East End community. The newcomers are famous for creating their own street style - later adapted for the high street by Topshop - and even a haircut, the dubious Hoxton Fin.
