Shannon is a unique Irish town, simply because it's so new. It was built in the 1950s on marshland where wild ducks and geese once roamed to serve the newly established Shannon Airport three miles away. The town welcomes visitors who find it a convenient place to stay - and they, in turn, discover that there's a lot to like about Shannon. The modern town centre provides great restaurants and pubs, a state-of-the-art leisure centre and a wide range of shopping opportunities, from the major stores in the Skycourt Shopping Centre to a bustling farmer's market. There are some very relaxing river walks through Shannon, which acts as a gateway to the countryside. Sightseers are within driving distance of the lovely old towns and villages of County Clare, famous landmarks such as Bunratty Castle, the Cliffs of Moher and The Burren, and the delights of Limerick, the neighbouring county to the south.
