A great way to enjoy the Burghley Horse Trials is to buy a caravan members ticket which allows you to park your caravan on the Burghley Park Golfcourse, ten minutes' walk from the centre of the showground. The facilities include a shop, showers and toilets and use of the golf clubhouse bar and restaurant. It is a superb event for horse lovers, who can, if they wish, spend four full days just horse watching - and that means watching horses and their riders at the absolute top of the sport of eventing. However, it would be a shame to miss the shopping. I do all my Christmas shopping during the event, where the craft tents house some of the most interesting craftspeople in Britain. Food stalls are great (but avoid the outrageously poor catering in the members' enclosure) if expensive, but hey, you're on holiday! The food section of the showground could provide the ingredients for a very good picnic, if you can be bothered, and the sites for picnics are plenty and picturesque. If the weather is good, as it was this year, it is a lovely, quintessential English few days.

Typical rip off Britain. £56 to walk around a park and pee in a wonky portaloo! Occasionally a horse gallops past really quickly and you may see it jump a fence if you're in the right place at the right time, but you'll be about 10 deep, so don't expect to see that much! £56 and they expect you to have the right change at the gate. Can you believe that? £56 and they can't even make change! Oh and the parking attendent who looked about 15 was rolling his eyes and waving at us to hurry into a parking spot at his chosen speed! I don't know about three day eventers but Burghley is clearly run by cowboys, because on X-country day when everyone wants to attend, they double the entry fee! If you paid a flat fee of £30 per car you'd still question whether you got value for money. Back to rip off Britain... Charged £5 for what was meant to be a delicious 100% pure organic beef burger. It was luke warm, actually tasted of grease and had the texture of a carpet slipper in a soggy bap. Had to throw it away. Bought a small bottle of pop, £1.80!!!! Asked if it was cold, they said yes... Was it eck! The only good thing was the Tetley tea stand, but how could you mess up hot water and a tea bag in a plastic cup. It was nice to see these horses up close, and to see the size of the jumps and the speed these riders are going at, but overall this is a really over-priced day out. Maybe it relies heavily on a certain crowd attending every year. But i can't imagine it attracting back new visitors year after year.
