We had gone back to the Red Lion for a bar meal as we had been there before and been served an excellent sandwich and fat homemade chips (that you dont seem to get in pubs anymore) We had sausage sandwich with caramelised onions and chips. They came out on a wooden (chopping)board (which to my knowledge are harbingers of bacteria due to all the knife marks on them). Chips were in a small metal saucepan looked very nice but were the same as Macdonalds. Sandwich was in very fresh white bread, but the type that sticks to your teeth. Onions were fried not caramelised. Not saying that the food was not ok and edible, but not worth the £6.95 price tag and certainly no different to getting a meal from Macdonalds!!

We have recently moved into the Boldon area and checking out best places to eat as my wife is quite fussy! Having driven past the Red Lion a few times, we always commented on how nice it looked. So decided to look for some reviews and found this. We have never ever read so many bad reviews of a pub and we have read quite a few! It may actually be worth trying to see if it actually is as bad as people say, if I can convince my wife that is.

Never again. Fancy charging for two courses and not even having one. My daughter is 9mths pregnant and ordered what she thought was pasta as it turned out it was mussels and she couldnt eat them due to her pregnancy. We were told we would have to pay for them even if she didn't eat them. We had both ordered two courses and all we had was a plate of salad. She was so upset and we decided not to stay. I paid the bill which was the full price. We will never go back and neither will our friends. Disgusting.

I have been a customer of the Red Lion for years, well before all of the extensions and the transformation to its status as a "gastro-pub" In the past, The food and service has been up and laterly down. I visited the restaurant today because a friend told me the quality under its new management was excellent, I can honestly say both the food and the service was second to none, worthy of top fine dining, It is a credit to the new management, I will be telling all of my friends, suppliers and customers to give it a go,,, nice one, John Reid

Went for birthday meal and have never been so dissapointed in my life. food was ok, nothing special, but servise was terrible. Asked for a reduced size meal for child and even offered to pay full price for this but was told they would only full size portion which was enormous for a child. Had yuk drink served and sent it back then they tried to slip it onto the bill! refused to pay for this drink and was told i had to. They then phoned manager and decided to deduct drink, talking about us at the top of there voice. accused us of using foul language, which we would never do infront of the daughter or women or children. Blonde girl was terrible and young waiter an absolute shambles. Never again!!!

The Red Lion is in general an excellent pub, with great decor, fantastic food and beer not bad either. The staff in general are great apart from one guy, tall with a pony tail who completely ruins the place with his arrogant attitude. I wish I knew his name then I would write personally to the pub and complain. This member of staff completely ruins an otherwise good pub. Note to the owners; get rid of him! Mark, Boldon

visited the red lion again today and have to say that the food was still lovely as it was on 14th may my last review. But we chose to sit outside as it was a very hot day so we were given a menu at the bar and told after we'de chosen we had to go back in the bar to order and get our drinks and carry them out to the table plus we had to leave our payment card with the staff behind the bar. This is something we have never had to do in the years we've been dining there. I was told if I didn't leave my card I would have to pay before I even ate which I chose to do. The whole point of me going to somewhere like the red lion is for a treat and to be pampered, I could go to Brewsters and stand at the bar to order. Please don't spoil a lovely meal by lack of service you are a lovely eating place but for the extra money we spend i think it would be nice to have the same service we used to have to make it a little bit of a treat.

Decided to go here as its a pub thats well reccomended and popular. What we actually found was a bar full of locals who didnt seem to like visitors. It was nt hostile, just a sort of snobbishness.Locals given preference at bar and the final insult was told bar had closed at 11,no bell or last order call,no last drink and 35 minutes sat waiting for transport home to arrive.we were given a glass of tap water to help pass the time while the bar staff continued to serve locals on the sly after time. We wont be going back.

I am not one for posting my views on a site like this usually but after reading the review by Julie Dodds I had to share my experience of the Red Lion with you. As it is such a contrast. I too like to think of the Red lion as my local and can say that I honestly think it goes from strength to strength. The change of ownership has been a breath of fresh air. They have brought with them additional warmth and closeness which has enhanced the atmosphere and turned a good place into a great place. So if you enjoy good food and drink in a warm and friendly environment get yourself to the Red Lion. I can highly recommend the Sunday roast !!!!!!!!!!

Has the Red Lion changed management? I wonder! What a disgrace the place is. Nothing like it used to be. The food has gone downhill, as well as the service in all aspects of the establishment. Only a few members of staff are still of high standard, which has made me wonder whether to keep it as my local. For future reference, i would just like to comment in saying that changes need to be made in making the pub the Red Lion it used to be, with an atmosphere and ambiance that customers like myself would enjoy. If you read this i would like to thankyou for your time.

My wife and I booked a table for 2 at 7:30 as we were going to see a movie that started at 8:40. We reached the restaurant at 7:15, ordered a drink and we were seated in very large uncomfortable solid wood seats. We missed the started and just ordered two well done steaks. The steaks eventually arrived at 8:15 with two separate sauces. We asked the waitress which was which and she pointed them out, we had our doubts after tasting them and asked again but she insisted that she was correct so we poured the sauces over our steak, sure enough, we were right and both meals were spoiled. When it came to paying the bill, we were told that it is not their policy to refund or reduce any bills, then after phoning the management the next morning we were told that we would just have to "live with it" Needless to say we will not be visiting the Red Lion again, and we were late for the movie so the night was ruined.
