outstanding food and service, and the portions are very generous. A 16th century barn with heaps of character. we had sunday lunch which was excellent and perfectly cooked. desserts were lovely and all homemade.the bill did not break the bank either.

We have eaten at the Barn many times and the food is very good. The lunchtime 2 course special at £6 is excellent value and the Sunday roast is also good. The ethnic selections such as curry and chilli are tasty if a little bland - a bit like spicy food your gran used to make in the old days. Only one complaint - they can't do chips. In these days of nice and crispy double and triple cooked fries these are consistently a soggy brown travesty. Please can we have some nice chips!

Our family meal here was fantastic. I was so taken with the atmosphere of the barn the moment I walked in. The open fire, the entire character of the building was absolutely wonderful. The choice of food was very very good and there was plenty of choice for the entire family. As for the quality of the food, I just could fault it. A real treat.

Extremely friendly and welcoming staff. Very good menu choice and excellent quality of food. Really nice dining experience and pub / restaurant atmosphere. The barn setting is lovely. On my list now as a 'definite' place to go back to when I'm next in the area. Very good value for money and you don't feel that you're being ripped off.

We have just re-visited Alfold Barn to celebrate the day we first met there 25 years ago, and neither of us were disappointed! The building itself has changed little in all these years, but what was most impressive was the fantastic food and friendly, family atmosphere. The food was amazing and cooked to perfection - Kevin's starter of Tiger Prawn Cocktail looked too artistic to spoil by eating it, but he assures me it tasted every bit as good as it looked! The staff were all very polite & friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. We would both recommend this place to everyone for the food, atmosphere, service as well as good value for money. Alfold Barn - be warned - we will be back!!! (Thank you for a fantastic evening xxx)

We booked a table for 4 for 8 p.m. and arrived to find that the smiling and welcoming waitress seemed to sense who we were without needing to ask our names. The restaurant area is large, beamed, and with enough table space for food and drinks. I would have preferred more real ale choice than the London Pride they had, but it was perfectly acceptable. The meals were of good size, extremely tasty, and accompanied by vegetables that were freshly cooked to the right degree. Regular offers of 'If you want more, please say so'. We all liked our choices very much. The lamb shank was full of flavour and fell off the bone, the cajun offering was 'the best I can remember eating', the salmon and gammon dishes equally praiseworthy. One of us often works in a pub, and remarked that you could tell straight away that it was not the typical 'bought-in' food that was on offer in far too many pubs and restaurants. Nothing was too much trouble for the waitress, who twice offered us the chance to top up our coffee. A really pleasant evening. The 4 of us will do our best to meet there again! We have already mentioned how much we enjoyed our visit to several friends.

I wanted to take my family somehwere "special" when they visited from Australia and South America and I chose the Alfold Barn. We were not disappointed. The family who run it were exceptionally friendly and the food was first class. The south american, who is known to be fussy, asked for something which was not even on the menu and they did it for him as a one off. (Surf and Turf) He said it was one of the best he had tasted anywhere in the world. Everyone complemented the food, which was hot, well cooked and plentiful. The bill didnt make my eyes water either, which I regarded as very good value. Full marks and definately highly recommended.

having read the last review, i am glad i was in the alfold barn on this lunchtime in question. these people were very rude and demanded a table, not as they said....how there are two sides to every story. we have been going to the alfold barn most wednesdays for their £5 two course lunch, and fantastic it is. the family that run it are always friendly and accomodating. more importantly the food is fab and good value. i don't quite know what some people want. if you go into Macdonalds and an area is closed off, you don't question it...why do we feel we can dictate to a restaurant, where we want to sit. and by the way the table went to a three about two minutes later, it may have been booked i don't know. see you next week alfold barn.

My wife and I decided to visit the Alford Barn Inn for lunch as we were looking for a venue to take a number of friends for lunch. We were disappointed by the approach to the restaurant as the groundy were overgrown and the path to the entrance was muddy. I asked to have a look around and there were two people seated having lunch. We were offered a very small table and we asked if we could have the table (for three) by the fire. A resounding No was the answer from the Landlord-when we asked him to reconsider, bearing in mind there was only one table being occupied we were told in no uncertain terms, very sarcastically, that no doubt next time we would be asking to sit at a table for 6 or 8 persons. The attitude of the landlord, if that is who he was, was very offensive. We left immediately. Having read previous reviews it is not the first time that the owner/manager has upset customers. There are plenty of very good reataurants in the locality and we would recommend that this establishment is given a miss.

This is our favourite restaurant. We love coming here, whether it be a week night treat or a special occasion. The food is fantastic, so fresh and tasty. The service is impeccable and the staff are always so friendly. The barn itself is beautiful with original beams, candles, open fire and a really cosy feel. We thoroughly enjoy eating out and since we moved to the area 3 years ago, this is the best place we have eaten by far.

what an absolutely outstanding restaurant. the food was first class, i had scallops with bacon and my husband had smoked haddock with scrambled egg...i have never been so jealous in my life. for main course i had the fillet steak and he had lamb. this food should be on television. the staff are so welcoming and attentive and the family that own it are superb. i cannot say enough positive things about the barn. we will definitely be back. apparently the sunday roast is out of this world, and kids eat free.

My husband and I were on our way to Gatwick Airport when my husband noticed the Alford Barn Inn. He remembered frequently going to this particular pub many years ago and said that we would pop in for a drink on our return journey from the airport. At approximately 6.15 pm we arrived at the pub to find it very dimly lit - to the extent that we wondered if it had closed down! There were no lights on in the car park or above the pub sign itself to indicate that they were open. On making our way up a very muddy and unlit pathway we came across a gate which had a piece of wet paper attached saying "please use other entrance"!! Well where actually was this entrance? On gingerly making our way back down the dark pathway, with me slipping in the process as the mud was so thick, we made our way round the back of the premises (still in the dark). We tentatively opened the door to be met with the gents toilets directly to our left?!! My husband opened what we hoped was the main door to the pub (as there was not actually a sign there to indicate that this treasure hunt to find the door was the correct one)! Bingo it was the right one. Immediately we wished we had not bothered. A middle aged man and lady were behind the "bar" - she looked particularly disgruntled that we had come in! At the centre table were a family eating. There were no optics or beers on display to indicate what they actually had to offer. My husband was reluctantly given the choice of 2 ales! I popped my head round to corner and could clearly see it was the dining room. I asked if we could have our drinks there (mainly because there was limited seating in the bar area and we would be very close to the family eating rather noisily and talking at the same time). I was told in no uncertain terms that we had to sit in the bar area!! Well considering we were the only 2 customers on the premises and were hardly going to cause a nuisance we were not very impressed. Clearly also the family eating were involved with the pub. We were neither made to feel welcome or comfortable in our short time there. By short I mean by us drinking up rather quickly so we could leave as soon as!! Not a pleasant experience and rather disappointing for my husband as he had reminisced about how good it was there all those years ago! Ah well the good old days have clearly gone! We will neither be returning to this pub or recommending it to any of our friends. Considering the current economic climate and the number of pubs closing down on a daily basis I think the owners/staff would do well to at least smile and be hospitable to those spending money on their premises!! Enough said!

Beautiful pub, full of character and friendly staff. Food all cooked to order so a bit of a wait between ordering and delivery but you don't get this quality of food when it's preprepared. Enjoyable evening and fair value for money.

My husband and I have been to this lovely pub/restaurant many times, sometimes with friends who visits. The food is very very good. Unfortunately one bad thing we came across. Myself and 2 friends who came to visit went to the Barn for dinner booked for 6.15pm. We got there about 6.25/6.30pm. We were sat at table and ordered drinks, given menus and sat to have a little browse and chat but was told by the manageress we were late; 6.15 means having arrived, sat at table and ordered by 6.15. when we informed her this was never the case anywhere else and that we felt we were being hurried, she took offence and implied if we wanted to stay we had to order as she had a table of 10 arriving and if we did not order now, we would not be served until after 9.pm. I asked how long we had the table for, she said as long as we wanted. We then skipped starters and ordered main course. She made her way to the kitchen then returned 2 mins. later and told us she had cancelled our order. We were dumbstruck. Asked her why? She said she did not think we would be happy with their cooking. We were so surprised, we were unable to utter words. This is scandalous. My friends could not believe how rude this lady was. We then left and went somewhere more friendly. We or anyone that we know will not be returning to that restaurant ever again unless there is a change of manager/ess.
