I wanted to take my daughter, grand-daughter and her friend out for lunch, something a bit more special than the usual Harvester. I had been to the Black Bull in the past with my husband and with a group from work and thought I would be guaranteed good food and service even though the price is a good bit higher than normal pub food. What a disappointment! My starter - the smoked salmon was tasty enough but no trouble had been taken with pesentation - simply a piece of salmon and 2 sices of cucumber. My daughters crab and avacado - tasty but VERY small and expensive. Main courses - 1) Lasagne and chips and salad brought to table along with a dish of roast potatos, and a dish of cauliflower cheese. 2) My Skate on a plate. "8" minutes later I went to the bar to ask if the rest of our meals were coming. The 2 plates of lamb roast arrived. I asked if the cauliflower and roast potatos went with the skate too - yes and they had to bring the veg - a large plate of VERY soggy sprouts (obviously frozen), carrots and green beans arrived, by which time my skate was cold. I asked for another glass of wine but was told to go to the bar - I refused as my dinner was cold enough already. The lamb, skate and lasagne was very tasty - the rest mediocre at best! We decided against dessert and coffees. Total bill for 2 starters, 4 mains, a glass of wine and 3 cokes - over £73. Asked if everything was OK I said "Not really" to which the barmaid said "Oh" and passed me a saucer of mints! I have NEVER been anywhere where the staff are so uninterested in their customers or where the food is so ove-rated or over-priced. Don't waste your money - drive a little further- anywhere would be better.

Four of us had lunch yesterday at the Black Bull in Fyfield. The girl serving behind the bar was miserable and very surly. She poured my drink and placed it at the opposite end of the bar to where I was standing. The girl who served our meal was equally as miserable. She banged our drinks down on the table so hard that we had liquid on the table which she did not wipe up. Our food continued our dissatisfaction. A baguette was burnt, two meat meals were swimming in gravy and very unappetizing and another baguette was full of fat.

Waited half an hour before our order was even taken. Then waited a further hour before we received the main course, good jobe we did not have a starter. Then when my friend confronted the owner, he was told not to bother to come there again if he did not like it. Food was stewed when it arrived.

We wanted a Sunday lunch and used to come out to the Black Bull years ago when the children were young. Sorry to see that the large back garden is now largely a car park, but the restuarant itself was welcoming and bar staff very friendly. Sunday luch is served all day, right up till 9pm apparently. We enjoyed a choice from a full range of roast meats and daily specials. Portions were large; I noticed small children at the next table really couldn't manage the size and wonder whether they do "children's portions"? However, as hungry adults the food was excellent with tasty vegetables served separately. Plenty of nice starters and puds if you have the room! Would definitely recommend this place as a relaxed, friendly pub restaurant with no pretensions and good food.
