Don't know if the lady from London's East-End still runs The Black Boy, but on summer holiday from USA, staying at Frinton-On-Sea with Pops, we regularly ate at this wonderful historic inn-pub. Love going upstairs to the Loo & passing by the inn rooms. The food was marvy. We couldn't get enough of their Steak Pie. I particularly, being a regular He Man, enjoyed the Steak & Kidney Suet Pudding which the owner said is an East-End dish. I don't care where it came from, it was delish every time I devoured it. I'm interested to find out if anyone concurs & whether it is under same ownership. I've noticed several rather uncomplimentary reviews which are quite surprising. If the food is anything like it was, it's worth a flight across the pond just to satisfy the taste buds. - Napoleon Dynamite.

We walked in as a family of 6. We were not greeted or asked if we wanted a drink. We were seen, but ignored, we approached a member of staff after a while as we all stood there with our coats on waiting for someone to seat us at our booked table, and my nan of 86 was hungry. The staff are unprofessional, and very rude. For one instance when we received 6 slices of bread we politely asked if we could have another basket to be told. " I just gave you 6 slices" we had to ask 3 times. The staff were very rude all night long. I asked what chicken supreme was to be told "well its chicken supreme" lol. My food was overcooked, and some of my veg had previously been frozen. Terrible and very disappointing. service and food.

Popped in for a drink this evening with my wife and son, we all stood at the bar and ordered drinks, landlord took money and then said that as our son was under eighteen that we could not stay in that part of the pub and could go and sit in the area behind the large chimney place! Felt like we were in the naughty room, had he explained this before ordering drinks it may have been different. As a very regular pub user I found this(and did tell the landlord)to be the most unwelcoming pub that I have ever been in, and thats saying something! Well that is my experience of this pub.

I booked a table for four, the surroundings and the service was superb and the waiteress was extremely polite and attentive. I had ordered a T- Bone steak to be cooked medium rare, the steak was done done to my liking but the cuy of the T-B steak was dreadful and was full of gristle which i showed to the waiteress who agreed, and took it back to the chef. I did state that i had enjoyed the the rest of the meal and told the waitress so but thought it fair and just that the chef should see for himself. When the waitress returned she told me that the chef agreed that the steak was not of the best cut and that it was not down to him and so made no applolgy. I would suggest that had this individual had been a trained chef he would have inspected the steak before serving it to a customer. I felt extremely sorry for the waitress as she was clearly uncomfortable delivering this message to me. I was not looking for any compensation as the rest of guests enjoyed their meals. I have since visited the Inn for an evening drink but i am afraid i will not be eating in this Inn again as it appears the Chef is not responsible for the food that he presents to the customer. Black Boy your waiting and bar staff are superb but your Chef is found wanting. John Sherratt

Probably the nicest meal I have had in a long time. There were 12 of us at our table and we were all served our food at the same time. The BEST CHIPS ever.

Probably the best meal out i have ever had. I can eat a lot, but I could'nt finish may meal. The staff are very polite and make you feel welcome, even moving us to another table with more room because we are both quiet tall. We will definatly be going back again when we are up that way at easter.

My husband and I have no hesitation in recommending this pub as a good place to eat. The food was first rate and it was nice to be in a pub where there were other customers! If you are looking for somewhere special to eat this is it!

Just got home after staying at the Homestead Lake caravan site. Had a meal at the Black Boy on Sunday night. It was one of the best restaurant meals we have had in a long while. The portions are large and the menu just as big! The waitresses were very efficient and friendly. Go and try it! We shall certainly return.
