In May 2009 we had to wait 2 hours for our lunch at The Ship in spite of having booked a table. I had just had an operation and my daughter-in-law was in the late stages of pregnancy & heavy with twins. Our 18 month old granddaughter was also a member of our party of 7. It was an uncomfortable experience for all of us and we have only just dared go back & try again. What an amazing change! We've had lunch there twice now in recent weeks and although the pub was packed on the Bank Holiday Monday the friendly service & delicious local food were both excellent. The walks near The Ship are beautiful. On the first occasion we walked along the Dane Valley from Rushton had lunch at The Ship and walked back. Last time we walked through the bluebell wood to Hangingstone & back before we ate. With such wonderful local scenery and high quality food who needs foreign holidays. Both these occasions were pure pleasure.

Unfortunately the pub has gone from bad to worse over the last year. The pub is leased by an absentee landlord called Roy who employs various managers to run the place, people who have never run a pub in their lives. I am afraid that it is has now become a place where locals advise you not to eat the food, rather than a place that they where proud to recommend all the local produce on the menu. W J Lee's will surely spot that their recent purchase of the Ship is now heading to be the Titanic and do something before it gets below the water line.

Went in the Ship Sunday, no lights on in the room adjoining the bar, chairs on tables, landlady decides to have a fire drill, no better way to empty a pub. The current landlord has lost the plot. Needs bringing back up to the standard that it was when Giles Meadows ran it.

Food good but bar staff rather 'giggly' and inexperienced - couldn't open our bottle of wine and had to ask another customer to do it. The pub now looks scruffy outside and the old chef - who was responsible for some of the nicest meals I have ever tasted - has now left.

Superb food as always. Absolutely no chance of new manager making costmetic changes. This guy ran the pub for the previous owner and won't change anything which will affect this great establishment. Highly recommended for food and atmosphere

Pub now bought by W J Lees and now a managed house. Food still good, but possibility of new manager making unecessary cosmetic changes that may alter the character of the pub, only time will tell.
