I believe The Angel has fairly recently come under new management. It has a nice atmosphere, blending traditional decor with the slightly unusual such as a mural at the far end. The food and wine were good and nicely presented, though not cheap - see their website for approximate prices - and the service was good too: intelligent, friendly but respectful. I visited the Angel with a group of eight on a Saturday evening, and while there were a fair number of diners, it wasn't as full as it deserves. A mistake on the bill was sorted out in such a friendly and helpful spirit that I felt I'd been talking to a friend rather than dealing with a restaurateur! Unfortunately, they were just about to install a new, smart billing system, so I'm very unlikely to have the excuse to do so again :-) However, I won't need an excuse, or much persuading, to eat there again.

We went to The Angel for the first time and were very pleased. The staff were friendly and efficient, the room layout was pleasant and not crowded and the open log fire was very welcome. My wife had the fillet steak which was cooked just as she had asked and which she said "melted in the mouth". It was a substantial portion. I had the seared tuna steak on roasted tomatoes and lime roasted potatoes. This too was beautifully cooked and presented and really tasted nice. We both had the chocolate fondant desert which again was substantial and well worth the advertised 20 minute wait. The food is not cheap but given its quality, quantity and the lack of crowding it is worth going there for a special occasion. Our compliments to the chef and staff for a lovely meal. We have resolved to go there again.

On Friday 22nd December myself and my work colleagues went to the Angel for a team lunch. We have previously been to the angel and the food was lovely, but it is under new management now and the standards of food have dropped and the prices have rises!!! it is now £10.00 for a burger, 4 of my colleagues ordered the burger and every single meal had to be sent back. The burger was dripping with fat and it was very poor quality meat. When we complained to management the did not appologise, they were quite rude to us. A small glass of wine is now £6.00. If you do decide to go out for a nice meal in a friendly pub i would advise you to choose a different pub, DO NOT GO TO THE ANGEL if you are looking for good food at a good price. To summarise - since new management have taken over the angel is no longer a friendly pub, the food is VERY poor quality, management are rude and everything is over priced. PS - even after reading this you do decide to eatat the angel DO NOT sit near the fire as you will get smoked out!!
