Fantastic Short Break A short break to the are to visit newly arrived Grandson. We were met by a friendly receptionist, clean room, friendly attentive staff and fantastic brreakfasts. The Full English and the Smoked Haddock being the highlight. The views of the river from the room were beautiful. Stay again ??? Definately, our next vist is already being planned and we shall definitely be staying at The Shard

Short stay in Shard Riverside Found on website a few days before we were due to travel. Easy booking and a good deal through Laterooms.com. On arrival there was a friendly welcome from the Gen. mngr. and efficient check-in. The room and its en-suite was very clean and bright. The bed and bedding clean and comfortable. Dinners and breakfasts were served speedily on hot plates and the dishes were well cooked and tasty. The only complaint was that the room overlooked the carpark and we were woken at 0630 by the crash of empty bottles as the bins were emptied into the refuse truck! Not the Hotel's fault!

Wonderful! Our stay at The Shard was a joy. The staff were friendly, courteous and helpful; our room was clean and well kept, tastefully decorated and well-equipped. It was not spacious but was very comfortable all the same. I would have been nice to have a view of the river rather than the car park, but for an overnight stay it was perfect. We ate dinner in the restaurant and the food was fantastic, as was breakfast the next morning. Everything was geared to make our stay very comfortable - thank you! We will definitely be visiting again.

Tiny reception desk hides huge welcome. We were attending a family wedding nearby and stayed 2 nights in a mid-size spotless room overlooking the river. All staff without exception were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We ate in the restaurant on the first night plus breakfast both days and enjoyed excellent food that had been locally sourced and very well cooked. Checking in and out was a model of efficiency and many other hotels could usefully learn how to do it this easily.

Only stayed one Saturday night visiting family - nice clean room but breakfast was a disaster. Three of us arrived at 9:00 am despite 3/4 staff no one welcomed us told us where anything was - we were finally asked what we wanted and received coffee and toast at 9:30 still no breakfast so politely asked if we had been forgotten - were told in no uncertain manner that nobody had been forgotten and we had to wait as they had a problem in the kitchen. At 9:50 still no breakfast so we ask again - oh thought you had had your breakfast you must have bee forgotten!! These things happen I suppose but could have been a bit more friendly and a simple everything ok question in stead of clearing and cleaning tables may have avoided this problem.

Stayed for 1 night. Staff couldn't do enough for us and even arranged breakfast earlier than normal so we could hit the road. Rooms were comfortable and breakfast was nice. We didn't try the evening meal as we were visiting friends. However we will stay there again on our next trip. The room we stayed in had a great view ,it was a little noisy with the wind blowing across the river, but this is to be expected with a hotel which is situated on the river front. The views were fantastic.

There is nothing to complain about with this hotel. Everything from food to facilities were excellent - this is the first time I have stayed anywhere where I could actually make this comment - Brilliant.

Good points: 1. Nice location 2. Good decor and well appointed rooms Bad Points: 1. Have to pay full amount before getting key ....perhaps they know about their poor service standards already ? 2. Stroppy staff ...particulary at breakfast time who are already clearing breakfast items from the table before you finish. The look of disgust on their faces when people arrive for breakfast at 9:25 (when its advertised as 9:30 finish)....I thought that we were the customers ??? 3. 11:00 pm bar even for hotel guests....strictly enforced and with further stroppy staff to get you out of the bar area at 11:20. There is no lounge area in the "hotel" so its off to bed then ! 4. Poor food in restaurant...this could be just what we ordered but it was not that good and several others suffered similar experances. In summary, the excellent location off the premises was ruined by the poor attidude of the staff that leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. The owners should understand that its their customers that pay the bills and should treat them with respect and not contempt. Sorry that this is a bad review but it needs to be said. Would consider staying at the premises again only if the attitude of the staff would change.

Excellent small hotel, in a fantastic location. Food was good and the restaurant had a great view of the river. Staff were friendly and the rooms are clean and modern styled. Ideal for a few nights break.

Good Points: Room small but nicely appointed. Beautiful view. Good location. Bad Points: No hairdryer in room. There is no lounge facility so as the room is small with only one chair, there is no place to sit and relax. No traditional ale served in spite of statement in promotional leaflet.

This was the second time this year that we have stayed at The Shard. The hotel has delightful rooms with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. Its downfall lies in that the service it states in their brochure, the staff don't seem to have read. Brochure states it serves cask ales - it doesn't. Brochure states 'For a long night of catching up with friends you can lose yourself for hours in our bar' Our experience was quite the reverse, after dinner, which was served in a stressful way and accompanied by the taste of disinfectant as they cleaned the adjoining table with a spray, we walked to the bar. A Waitress shouted to the young barman "don't serve them the bar is closed" No mention was made to us that it would close at 11.0 Maybe as the service had been slow we could have been offered the option of having coffee in the bar along with a drink. As the hotel has no lounge those of us staying had to go to our rooms and other friends had to leave. Sunday breakfast was served with a distinct lack of interest and again accompanied by the spray of disinfectant. Oh that they had been so fastidious about the cutlery they were laying. My spoon had a dollop of food adhered to the bowl and there were ringmarks in the cups. We would like to have used this hotel on a regular basis in order to visit family and friends but I have no wish to be treated so inhospitably again.

The service and management of this hotel and restuarant seems to be continuing in the same way. Breakfasts for guests arriving within 20 mins of the harsh 9.00am morning deadline are treated to a depleted buffet with the Blackpool landlady attitude of noisy chair and table clearing with orders being taken before you have even sat down. Evening dinner guests suffering the very slow service find the "coffee machine turned off" when requesting coffee at the end of their meal. Bar guests ordering anything that their bar may not have receive the single word response "No" from the young lad who has obviously never had any guidance or training and, oh yes, checking out time is 10.30am latest! All a great shame as the good accomodation and food and excellent prospect over the river could offer much better service. I believe that the owners have another place elsewhere and this is a sattelite venture. Their presence is needed on site.

I took 5 friends for an evening meal, the service in the bar was truly dreadful, the service at the meal not much better, will not go back..they seemed to prefer the "bikers" drinking beer than serving us liqures.
