Perth is a royal burgh and ancient capital city of Scotland, situated along the banks of the River Tay in central Scotland. Perth is a busy market town and popular tourist resort. Perth is famous as the site where Scone Abbey once stood and where all Scottish Kings were enthroned on the historic Stone of Destiny, (now sited in Edinburgh Castle). Perth is also well-known for horse-racing. Perth is an ancient settlement relics date back to the Mesolithic period, Social and natural history and material from medieval Perth are found in the town’s museum. Architectural and historical attractions include Scone Palace 1802, the 15th century Balhousie Castle; with Black Watch museum and St John Kirk; the town’s oldest building dating back 900 years, the church was dedicated to St. John and Perth was previously known as St. John’s Town. Examples of late medieval Scottish tower-houses, Elcho Castle and Huntingtower Castle; are popular venues for weddings. Perth retains a historic atmosphere with modern developments. The High Street is pedestrianized with a major shopping centre; St. John’s Centre contains the main chain stores and shops, there are supermarkets, fast food outlets, restaurants, night clubs and pubs, all in close proximity to the ruins of the city wall, the Cathedral, City hall, theatre, museum and art gallery. Perth’s town centre is bordered by two public parks, the North and South Inches. The South Inch offers boating, crazy golf, putting, trampolineing, bowling and a children’s playground. Perth has magnificent scenery and there are forest walks through Kinnoull Hill and Craigie Hill and a National heather collection at Bells Cherrybank Gardens. Perth has many sporting facilities including Perth Racecourse, Perth Leisure Pool, bowling club, sports complex, cinema, golf course and an ice-rink. The local football team is St Johnstone their home-ground is McDiarmid Park.
