Studied art in Edinburgh. Issued a set of lithographs in 1821, Sketches of Scenery in Perthshire, probably the first published in Scotland. Used the newly invented process of making photographic prints on silver chloride paper to produce thousands of portraits and landscapes. One of the founders of the Royal Scottish Academy.
