1879 - 1970 . English novelist and critic


Educated at King’s College, Cambridge. Part of Bloomsbury Circle. Novels examined English middle class ethos, civil service, Church and public schools. Early novels include Where Angels Fear to Tread (1905) and Room with a View (1908). Published his masterpiece A Passage to India in 1924. Also wrote short stories, essays, lecutres and biographies, libretto of opera Billy Budd.
