Chitterne
Chitterne is a small remote village nestling in the folds of the archaeologically rich chalkland of the Salisbury Plain, 8 miles west of Stonehenge and surrounded by Ministry of Defence owned land. The village has existed since at least Saxon times and still boasts two Manor houses, reminders of when there were two parishes: Chitterne All saints and Chitterne St Mary. There are many large chalk and flint patterned buildings, typical of the region, bordering the Chitterne Brook. On the green, the beautiful new Village Hall is a popular venue for cricket teas on Sundays in summer, wedding receptions or art and craft sales. The Kings Head, the local pub, is perfectly situated to refresh walkers on the Imber Range Perimeter Path, a well-used walking route that passes through the village. From the village the walker, rider, cyclist, naturalist or historian can access large tracts of uncultivated chalkland habitat, where rare butterflies, wild flowers, birds and historical monuments abound.
