Born 1856 . Died 1950 - Irish dramatist, critic & Nobel Prize winner

First five novels written between 1879 and 1883 were rejected. Long period of struggle and poverty. Developed a belief in socialism and joined Fabian society. Made first impact as dramatic critic. Many plays followed including Arms and the Man, Major Barbara, Androcles and the Lion, Pygmalion and Saint Joan. Later prose work included The Intelligent Woman’s Guide to Socialism and Capitalsim.
