Rhodri Morgan

With Rhodri Morgan’s retirement as First Minister in the Welsh Assembly the British political scene is losing one of its very few senior office holders of independent mind, and a keen mind at that, honed at Oxford and Harvard. Twice kept from heading the Welsh Assembly by men more to central office liking Morgan showed they were right to be concerned – he has fought against dodgy dogmas like foundation hospitals – and wrong too, as the Welsh people continue to approve of his leadership and his willingness to speak out against things he disagrees with – a spin doctor’s nightmare. By retiring from his post at 70 Morgan goes against the dictum that all political careers end in failure, though Westminster colleagues seem likely to redress the balance.
