Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes

It is one of life’s truisms that as we age police officers appear to be getting younger. The pictures of the two WPCs killed in Manchester on September 18th reinforced that feeling with tragic intensity. PC Nicola Hughes was just 23 and her colleague Fiona Bone 32. Both should have had the greater part of their lives ahead. Those were lives of everyday heroism, dedicated to a community for which they were willing to face the perils of a suspected burglary in progress that proved to be something so much worse. Their loved ones and fellow officers should be proud of them, as should we all. How shaming that it takes such events to remind us of our debt to the far-from-ordinary ordinary copper.
