Vindolanda lies in the heart of Hadrian's Wall country and is a fascinating Roman fort and civilian settlement. Preserved in this outpost of the Roman Empire is the world's premier source of Roman Army documents - the earliest written material from Britain.

Numerous Roman buildings and hundreds of rare objects have been found during recent excavations which are still in progress. Next to the site is a superb country house museum set in charming gardens. Here the collections of Roman jewelry, armour boots, shoes, textiles, coins and wooden objects can be seen.

Set into the gardens are full sized reconstructions of a Roman temple, shop and house all with audio presentations. We offer visitors a warm welcome, super educational facilities and excellent discounts for a joint visit to our sister site (seven miles to the west) at the Roman Army Museum.
