Frank Richards was just one, albeit the most famous, of Charles Harold St John Hamilton’s pen-names. His career as a writer began in his late teens, and he was soon writing reams of stories for magazines, comics and newspapers, estimated by one source at the equivalent of 1200 full-length novels. His most famous character was Billy Bunter, whose adventures he chronicled for decades (including writing scripts for BBC productions of some tales).
