Ian MacLaren was the nom-de-plume of the Reverend John Watson, a Presbyterian minister educated at Stirling and Edinburgh universities. He published many books of sermons, lectured at Yale, and had an active clerical career, but his fame came through his various books of folksy Scottish tales of rural life which were at one time immensely popular – initiating what became known at ‘the Kailyard School.’
