Born 1937 - Northern Ireland politician and Nobel Prize winner.



Educated at National University of Ireland. Founder member of Credit Union Party, forerunner to the SDLP. Widely respected as moderate, non-violent member of the Catholic community. Became SDLP leader in 1979. Took part in Northern Ireland peace talks conversing with Sinn Fein leader, Gerry Adams. In 1998 share Nobel Peace Prize with David Trimble.
