Known for her husky voice. Studied at RADA before making her stage debut in 1938. Worked mainly on the stage appearing with Donald Wolfit's theatre company in the years following World War II. Made her film debut in John Smith Wakes Up (1940). Subsequent films included Whisky Galore (1948), Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) and The Man in the White Suit (1951).
