Studied at Reading University. Published Green Dolphin Country (1944), her first major success, which was made into a film. Other novels included Gentian Hill (1949) and The Child from the Sea (1970). Her book for children The Little White Horse (1946) won a Carnegie medal. Wrote biographies of Jesus Christ and St Francis of Assisi.
