Trained at RADA. First appeared on stage in 1922. Usually played affable, upper class characters sometimes with a cunning streak. Films included The Third Man (1949), The Browning Version (1951) and The Million Pound Note (1953). His career spanned fifty years, appearing in every type of British film and number of international ones including My Fair Lady (1964).
