Child model, made stage debut in Bluebell in Fairyland (1905). Appeared in The Importance of Being Earnest (1911) and The Second Mrs Tanqueray (1922). Primarily a stage actor but made film debut in 1913 and received three Academy Award nominations. Appeared in television series The Rogues (1964-65). Final stage appearance in The Chalk Garden (1971).
