Born 1928 - English novelist and art historian.

Authority on 18th century painting. First woman Slade Professor at Cambridge. Best known novel is Hotel du Lac (1984), won the Booker Prize. Other novels include Brief Lives (1990), A Family Romance (1993) and Undue Influence (1991). Awarded the CBE in 1990.
