After a spell in Australia working in engineering shops, he returned to England in 1893 and joined the Wolseley Sheep-Shearing Company in Birmingham. With the Wolseley company he produced his first three-wheeled car in 1895, and in 1905 opened his own works in Birmingham which became a huge success producing cars such as the ‘Baby’ Austin 7 in 1921.
