Elland is an ancient wool town set on the banks of the Calder River, in the county of Yorkshire, which is home to just over fourteen and a half thousand people. The settlement dates back many centuries, and grew with the expanding textile and woollen industry which saw many Mills being built here. The Construction of the Calder and Hebble Navigation Canal in the 1700's enabled the transportation of Elland flagstones far afield, though colourful pleasure craft are seen here today. The architecture is pleasing, from imposing Victorian buildings, rows of elegant Edwardian houses and cottages, to the splendour of the ancient church dedicated to St Mary the Virgin whose tower dominates the skyline. Visitors will easily uncover a fabulous range of pubs, restaurants and eateries, a choice of hotels, and B&B's to try, and the town centre which has a good range of shops, colourful market, and, with the busy towns of Halifax and Huddersfield close by its ideally placed for a bargain. Walkers are always tempted here with easy access to the stunning countryside of the Yorkshire Pennines, together with the long distance footpath of the Calder Way which stretches for fifty miles, and the delightful walks on offer along the tow path of the wide inland waterway of the Canal.
