Population 3700. Castle Douglas lies off the main A75 road from Dumfries to Stranraer (the Castle is called Threave). It is an important centre for a large part of rural Galloway.
There have been settlements here for many hundred of yearand from the early 1600s the town prospered as it lay on the route of the road built by James I to Portpatrick to support the migration to Ulster.
In 1792 after Sir William Douglas laid out a new village on the site of the old one. Today's street plan has changed little since. The main thoroughfare is King Street and its most outstanding feature is the large octagonal clock tower built in 1935.
An excellent centre for touring this vast rural area Castle Douglas can boast delights of its own with good hotels, Inns and B&B's and stunning attractions like Threave Gardens, run by the National Trust for Scotland.
