Littlehampton sits on the east bank of the River Arun, which up to the 13th century was known as the River Tarente. Known a Hamtun to the Saxons and in the Domesday Book (1086) as Hantone, by 1482 it was being called Lyttelhampton it is unclear why the `Little` was added. The port grew from humble beginnings and there was always a great rivalry between it and Arundel 4 miles up stream. In 1589 the estuary was described as being in a poor state but a lot of remedial work was carried out to improve access to the port. In the C18th and early C19th Arundel was predominant but as the size of boats increased they found it more difficult to navigate up the river and by 1824 four times as much shipping was using Littlehampton. The port is still thriving but the traffic is more and more pleasure sailing. Littlehampton also played its part in both World Wars and was an embarkation point for the D Day landings. Some 3000 bombs fell on Littlehampton during the Second World War, The tread towards sea bathing reached Littlehampton in the early 1800`s and rows of terraced houses were built near the sea about half-a-mile from the centre; the two parts were not linked by buildings until the late C19th by which time it had become a popular resort. Lord Bryon was a regular visitor as was Samuel Taylor Coleridge and the artist B.W.Leader committed many views of Littlehampton to canvas. The town still attracts many visitors with the Harbour Park and the Look & Sea centre proving popular and the East Beach Cafe causing mixed reactions with its unique design.
