In the Pennine hills, in Teesdale in northern England, lies the small village of Cotherstone a mile from Romaldkirk and Lartington, 2 miles from Eggleston and just 52 miles from Newcastle and 40 miles from Durham. At one time within the historic county boundaries of the North Riding of Yorkshire, the area was transferred to County Durham for administrative and ceremonial purposes in 1974. The railway line crossed the River Balder at the Balder Viaduct just north of Cotherstone where there was a railway station on the now-closed Barnard Castle to Middleton-in-Teesdale line. Just a short drive away is Walworth Castle, Scotch Corner, Raby Castle and Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, High Force, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Bolton Castle, Auckland Castle, Durham Castle and many other places of historical interest can be explored. Also close by is the Croft Circuit, Westmorland Motor Museum, Green Howards Regimental Museum and the Darlington Railway Museum. Low Barns Nature Reserve, a 50 hectare wetland site containing mixed woodlands and grasslands, regarded as one of Durham Wildlife Trust's premier reserves, is just eleven miles away. Cotherstone is a delightful Dales village that has grown from an agricultural community and has been designated as a conservation area in order to help protect its character. A celebrated local delicacy is Cotherstone cheese.
