Witney is a thriving market town in West Oxfordshire, world famous for its blankets. The Bishop's Palace site situated near to the Church on Church Green dates from the 12th century. The archaeological remains of the great hall and other features were discovered in the early 1980s and are now exposed under a modern roof. The Woolgate shopping centre can be found just off High Street. Corn Street in the town centre has many independent shops, food outlets and public houses such as The Chequers and The Butchers Arms. One of the most famous sights in Witney is The Buttercross building. The Witney Farmers' Market takes place on the third Wednesday of the month in the Market Place. Leisure facilities include Pirate Fitness, the Windrush Leisure Centre and Witney Lake and Meadows, a wildlife reserve just beyond the town centre. The Witney and District Museum tells the story of Witney's history with an emphasis on the Blanket Industry. Nearby, Cogges Manor Farm Museum is a unique working museum set in an historic manor house and farm buildings. North Leigh Roman Villa remains can be found a short drive from Witney. Blenheim Palace, home of the 11th Duke of Marlborough and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill, is 8 miles away.
