Boxted
The village itself dates back to Saxon times with a Grade I listed Norman church. In the 17th century many villagers formed a large part of the Great Migration to the colony of Massachusetts to the extent that, in the 1920ýs, 60% of the city of Boston could trace their ancestry back to Boxted. The two manors ý Boxted Hall and Rivers Hall - date back to Domesday while the timbered cottage, Songers, is the oldest private dwelling in Essex dating back to 1280.
The village is situated about 5 miles north of Colchester bordering on the Stour valley. There are details of a number of walks around the village on the site.
The village also contains the largest walnut orchard in the country that is featured on one of these walks.
The population of the village is about 1000 most of whom work in the neighbouring towns of Colchester and Ipswich. The land that used to produce vast quantities of soft fruit is now largely arable with woodland copses.
