The Giddings
Great Gidding, Little Gidding, Steeple Gidding
If you live in or around the Giddings, this is the place for you to keep up
to date with what's happening where you live ý and to let others know what's
happening with you. If you are visiting the area then we hope you'll find
the general information about the area and history to be of interest.
Formerly in the old county of Huntingdonshire, Great Gidding has been a
parish in the County of Cambridgeshire since the 1980s. Little Gidding lies
approximately one mile south of Great Gidding and was originally formed from
the existing settlement of Great Gidding, and Steeple Gidding is also in
close proximity.
Little Gidding Church is is a secluded place in beautiful countryside which
has borne witness to turbulent times over a thousand years with serenity,
simplicity and peace. Nicholas Ferrar and his family formed the first
Anglican community here in 1625 after the religious changes of the English
Reformation. King Charles I visited in 1642, and sought refuge in 1646. The
poet T.S. Eliot visited in 1936, and was moved to reflect upon the Church
and its history in the last of his Four Quartets: Little Gidding.
The Giddings website not only informs you about coming events, clubs and
societies in the vicinity, it keeps you amused with stories of village life
and events! It's a great way to keep your distant relatives up to date on
what's happening and to show them where you live. And a great resource if
you are visiting the area.
