In around 1251 the settlement of Cherlegh and the town was not officially Chorley until 1793 through an Act of Parliament. As far back as 1498 Chorley was a market town, a tradition that continues today, there are two main areas – The Flat Iron (known locally as “The Cattle Market”) and Chorley Covered Market which makes up the centre of the town with static lock up stalls.. Located in the County of Lancashire in the North West of England there is evidence that the Romans also visited the area, a hoard of Roman coins found were off Southport Road in around 1820. During the 1800’s Chorley was an important manufacturer of cotton, yarns calicoes and other cloth material as well as railway wagon building. Around Chorley there were bleachfields, printworks, coal; mines ands stone quarrying all contributing to the growth of the town. In 1935 the government at that time decided to erect a new arsenal in Chorley and to start manufacturing munitions, Chorley was the elected location and at the height of production it employed 28,000 people. In keeping with the wealth generated the area boats a number of stately homes, parks and gardens. Astley Hall is a Tudor mansion set in around 100 acres of parkland and today the hall is a museum and art gallery. As well as the surrounding parkland and woodland there are ample outdoor activities and residents and visitors alike can appreciate this market town.
