It is both common and somehow fitting that the life of a rugby team should begin in a pub. This is, indeed, how it began for Esher Rugby Football Club. In 1923, four friends met and decided to form a rugby club. Amongst the four was a Welshman who, no doubt homesick, insisted that the team should adopt the colours of his native club Newport. The team has played in black and amber to this day.

The early games were played on an obliging farmer's field, which was used for grazing cattle when not in use for rugby. Perhaps this assisted in the development of the player's evasive skills!

By the time World War II broke out, Esher was fielding eight teams. Unfortunately, the team was broken up due to the war and the teams ground ploughed for food production. Esher reformed after the war and the ground reseeded. A huge influx of players meant that by the 1950s Esher was fielding around 15 teams!

When the English League system started in the 1980s, Esher was placed in London League One. Initially the team struggled and dropped below this level, only to recover during the nineties. Since then Esher has steadily climbed through the divisions and now finds itself in the second tier of English Rugby.
