Racing first started at Southwell in the 1850's and has been run simultaneously since with a break when the RAF requisitioned the course in World War II.

In 1989 the course underwent a major development with the construction of a Fibresand All Weather track. Since then Southwell has played a major role in the British fixture list, hosting fixtures in every month of the year and, in particular, helping to ensure that racing does not grind to a halt during the inclement British winter.
