While thousands trawl the lengths of Borough Market looking for the country's best produce, smart foodies will cut to the chase and head to The Floral Hall to pay a visit to Roast. Opened by Iqbal Wahhab (of Cinnamon Club fame) with a mission to vault British cooking back to its rightful place on the international stage, Roast has scoured the country locating top quality ingredients and has painstakingly researched both ancient and modern cooking techniques to showcase the very best of British food. Using frontage from the portico of the old Covent Garden flower market for the front of the building, the first floor offers diners spectacular views onto the market on one side and St. Paul's Cathedral on the other. Menus change daily to reflect seasonality, and the restaurant features a large spit oven where ribs of beef, suckling pigs, birds or game are freshly roasted to perfection. Examples of choices of starters like Colcehster native oysters with shallot relish, roast dishes such as 28 day aged Scotch forerib of beef with Yorkshire pudding and mains of hake with seabeet, melted potted shrimp and crab butter proudly salute the Union Jack. Surely another success story in the making and a welcome addition to the Borough Market family.
