Hotels in Dartmouth

Spectacularly set in a stream–fed valley on a beautiful stretch of the South Devon coastline, Coleton Fishacre House was designed in 1925 for Rupert and Lady Dorothy D’Oyly Carte (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame) and reflects the Arts and Crafts tradition, but with refreshingly modern interiors. The garden at Coleton Fishacre descends from open views around the house, through increasingly jungle-like vegetation, down to the Coastal Footpath. The terraces and walled Rill Garden beside the house provide a formal introduction to the wilder garden below.

The garden’s acidic soil makes it suitable for a wide range of plants, including rhododendrons and camellias, both planted in great numbers. Atmospheric humidity is high and many moisture-loving plants grow to perfection beneath the tree canopy. Thanks to the mild climate, you will see species growing to an exceptional size here which can survive in few other places in Britain.
