The Slug and Lettuce in EC4 used to be, fittingly enough, a bank. As such, it is a relatively vast venue, full of light, space and wood, often hired for work and birthday parties. The size (it holds 750 people) has given the designers room to play so that the bar is set over two floors, the top one effectively a balcony. By the day, the pub feels more like a restaurant (especially upstairs), while at night it puts on its buzzy bar outfit. The staff, recruited on first impressions, is young, polite and amiable. Hiring options are very flexible, but to give you an idea, the pub is split into five main zones. The most popular is Zone 1 - the far left corner upstairs - which holds 50-60 guests. It's popular because it's packed with chocolate brown leather sofas and cubes, but mainly because it has its own section of the bar from where you and your friends can order drinks and food without having to queue with the rest of the public. Set and bespoke canapé and buffet menus can be arranged.
