An art gallery and wine merchant share the premises of this chaotically welcoming and friendly inn, the earliest parts of which date back to the early 1300's.

The keeper of the 'Foret' - the Royal hunting ground - used to live here, and nowadays it is quite common for distinguished shooting parties to drop in for lunch. The bedrooms are continually being refurbished with attractive fabrics and antique furnishings. There are some four poster beds all with antique bathrooms, and there are even peat fires in some bedrooms too.

The food served in the restaurant is well above average. A small but superb a la carte menu of predominantly English dishes includes choices such as seasonal roast game with traditional accompaniments.

The inn looks across the river towards the fells and Trough of Bowland. There are 7 miles of salmon, trout and sea trout fishing on the banks of the River Hodder and guests can fish from the Inn's grounds. Other sports can be arranged.

Browsholme Hall and Clitheroe Castle are close by and just across the river there are Neolithic cave dwellings.
