Rugby youngsters honoured THE Durham Tigers Rugby League Football Club held its annual presentation evening last month at the Bishop Auckland Rugby club. Chairman and coach, Steve Morley, made the welcome and introduced special guest, Dave Woods, head coach of Gateshead Thunder RLFC. Dave made a short speech where he praised the local club for trying to raise the profile of rugby league against the rising popularity of the union game. He thanked the parents for supporting the young players and promised that his coaches and players would help the fledgling club all they could. Steve then began the presentation of the awards for the Under 12s team with Gateshead Thunder player, Matthew Barron making the presentations. The Player of the Year, chosen by the coaches was revealed as David Nelson for his commitment and effort throughout the season. Players’ Player of the Year was Tom Clarke. The Under 14 squad who last year won the North East championship and has some of the players in the regional team were presented with their awards by Dave Woods. The Player of the Year was Josh Hawkins who was described as ‘well deserving, a fantastic player with an excellent attitude.’ The Players’ Player of the Year was Edward Hendy who is one of the regional players and known for his scoring ability. Head coach, Martin O’Regan, was not able to be present but he sent a message to the players and coaches. He emphasized the enormous contribution of all the coaches but especially Steve Johnson, Jonny Wright and Steve Morley whose hard work had helped to make the Under 14 team champions.
