Best rates for a Local Hotel

Having booked a family room (as it was the last room available on a Bank Holiday weekend), and having been assured of a double bed, my American girlfriend and I (British) were dismayed to see a double sofa bed upon entering. That would be our night's abode for the sum of a mere 100. We have on occasion slept in sofa beds when visiting friends and stayed in their living room, but never in a hotel and certainly not for 100 a night. We also expected to see at least a shower attachment to the bath (and for the bathroom to be free of hairs, etc) - every American wants a shower not a bath; forget about it. And we also expected to have been warned in advance that it was Chagford's annual Carnival with music and people in the street below; we were not. We decided that showers were clearly an alien concept (if you're American don't stay here), and we had simply to accept the Carnival's noise. Instead we decided to query the sofa bed. Oh dear... When challenged, it was clear from Mrs. Globe's (I shall call her that) dreadful reaction that customer expectations are secondary to the owners' expectations. We should be grateful for a sofa bed that was bought at some expense, we were told. It is extremely comfortable, we were told. And it is a double bed as promised, we were told. If some expense means a tenner spent on a sofa bed. If comfortable means leaving the bed to sleep in the two marginally less uncomfortable single beds (this presumably is where the parents would sleep (though not together of course) as they'd probably put their children in the sofa bed). And if describing a sofa bed as a double bed works for you, then technically, Mrs. Globe is right. Technically, this place is a hotel too. But Mrs. Globe is the sort of person who would call her establishment a hotel because it had a ceiling, some walls, and a fold-away bed that students would laugh at. We do not. Chagford itself is a lovely little town and we would recommend eating dinner at 22 Mill Street, having breakfast at the Three Crowns next door to the Globe, and Sunday Lunch in any one of the other two pubs. The Globe? We left the next morning, never to return, and determined to warn everyone else who has the impertinence to expect a bed and customer service in a hotel... The final insult was my girlfriend had the temerity to go downstairs for a couple of breakfast things since she'd had such an appalling night. "We don't do that here" came Mrs. Globe's customer-friendly voice. My girlfriend did to remind Mrs. Globe who's in charge, as we hope this review will too. BAD. BAD. BAD. DON'T EVER STAY HERE!

Good Points: Very nice spacious room. Liked the bar area; good service. Bad Points: No parking. we arrived on a Friday about 11.30 and could find nowhere to park - a bit of a problem as my Husband cannot walk too far. The description of the hotel sugggests that you would have no problem getting a parking space in the public car park - to be sure of this i would suggest arriving after the shops are closed. General review: Pleasant.
