I feel mugged after going here for my boyfriend's birthday dinner. The prices are exorbitant for what you get. For example, I ordered a starter from the special's menu of parma ham and figs, for £7. I got a plate with a fig on it, and two slices of parma ham. I was lucky they'd taken the plastic wrapping off the parma ham. For £7!
My boyfriend ordered a rare sirloin steak, at £16. If he'd wanted sauce with it, that would have been another £2. The vegetables were also an additional £2. He got a lump of grey overcooked meat on a plate. No garnish, nothing. The £2 vegetables consisted of some grey carrots, a tablespoon of frozen peas, one floret of brocolli and 2 small potatoes. They all tasted as though they'd just been bunged in the microwave. No butter, nothing.
Our total bill for two starters, two maincourses, two pints of beer and two glasses of wine was £69. I resent every penny I spent on it.

Our first visit to this establishment, and it will definitely NOT be our last! What a fantastic place. We could not fault it. The location is perfect, the inn itself is just gorgeous, so picturesque, with plenty of parking, and the owners/staff were very attentive.
The menu is great. A lot of variety - we had dressed Cornish crab as a starter, and a perfectly medium/rare (as ordered) matured steak as a main. Delicious, down to the last mouthful, and so well presented.
The service was good, and the pricing superb - and all in all one of the best meals out we have ever experienced. We will definately be back - and soon.

We took some friends here for what we hoped would be a memorable meal. Well, we certainly remembered it! A young man served us, full of self-confidence and clearly leading an enviably rich social life (to judge from the shouted conversation conducted with his friends at the bar while serving us). There was some unnecessary fuss to decant a reasonably ordinary Oz wine, then our meal arrived. A venison casserole, it was scarcely lukewarm. We immediately drew this politely to the attention of Madame, whose response was: 'Are you sure you weren't talking too long before you started?'. If I'd been on my own I would have walked out, but with guests in tow It's more difficult. They reheated the meal and we got on with it, but this is a place we shall definitely avoid in future. Pity: it's a lovely old building in a fine setting, but wasted. (Anyone looking for a decent pub-type restaurant hereabouts should go to the Plough at Bolhnurst, tel 01234 378870.)
