Born 1820. Died 1903 - English revolutionary philosopher.

Was railway engineer, teacher and journalist before becoming full-time writer. Particularly interested in evolutionary theory. Coined the phrase “survival of the fittest”. Major work was the nine volume System of Synthetic Philosophy (1862-93).
