Born 1933 - English economic and social historian of Scotland.
Educated at Clare College, Cambridge. Writing includes A History of the Scottish People 1560-1830 (1986) and many individual essays. Established links between Scottish, Irish, Scandinavian and other European historians. Histographer to the Queen in Scotland since 1993.
